Falls are the leading cause of death in construction, and account for 34% of all construction-related deaths. Eliminating falls in construction would save more than 300 lives every year. 
 

BBE fosters a culture of safety on all of our construction sites, which is why we recently teamed with Compliance Safety Consulting to provide our staff and subcontractors with Fall Protection Awareness training. Led by Mike Matthys, the training and live demonstration showcased the importance of fall protection safety and helped familiarize BBE's workforce with the dangers of fall hazards, as well as the proper use, inspection, care, maintenance, and storage of fall protection equipment

“Falls are preventable with the right tools, processes and training in place,” said Marko Kaar, BBE's Director of Safety Operations. “Our goal with the fall protection awareness training was to deliver a coordinated message to BBE's project teams and to encourage our workforce and the subcontractor community to listen to and share personal stories—reminding all of us what’s at stake every day on construction sites.”

The training emphasized the steps every worker should take to prevent falls, which include:
 

• Taking a moment to recognize the fall hazards nearby.

• Planning the work—what tasks will be involved and what equipment is necessary.

• Communicating changes or challenges to safety or supervision.

• Getting training to use equipment properly and stay safe.

• How to inspect, wear, and maintain a harness
